Produced from papers delivered at the University of Pennsylvania's tricentennial of the first German settlement in North America, this work is a welcome addition to the meager literature on German-Americans. Interesting papers included are those on immigration to Brazil versus that to the United States; the German language in the United States; Pennsylvania-German life; three 19th-century German-American women authors; German-Jewish immigration; West German and U.S. Cold War involvement as seen through Time and Life ; and the effects of the anti-German movement in the World War I era. A paper on obscure early German-American literature and one on Sigmund Freud seem superfluous, and a lack of papers revealing personal diaries and letters is a weakness. Recommended. Roger W.
