Chapters are divided by specialities--barbers, dentists, midwives, obstetricians, pharmacists, physicians, etc. Cross-references to other chapters and other books in the series along with the detailed index will help students to find the particular area of history they need. Black-and-white illustrations include reproductions, drawings, and photographs. There is a great deal of information included, but occasionally statements are not fully explained. The discussion of dentists omits periodontists, and a statement about psychiatric drugs gives the impression that the authors do not appreciate new developments in the chemistry of the brain. However, these are minor quibbles with a valuable research tool containing difficult-to-find information in one volume.
