From the Publisher:
I sell books for Ballantine. When I started this job five years ago, this book was already in bookstores. It is a book my customers sold to me, and it has ended up being one of my favorite books from any publisher.

If you haven't discovered Lee Smith yet, this is the book to start with. The story is told in the unique form of letters spanning the life of Ivy Rowe. Ivy was born around the turn of the century in a small cabin in the southern Appalachians. If you have spent any time in this part of the county, Ivy's letters will bring their beauty back into fresh focus. Her letters also reflect the poverty and difficulty of life in the back woods. Ivy rebels against this way of life and grows up with the hope of making something of herself. This book though, is far from a Cinderella story. Ivy is far too human.

Just as this book was recommended to me, I have in turn recommended it to others. It is a timeless gem that I know will be passed on to book lovers for years to come.
Karen Hayes, Ballantine Sales Rep.
From the Inside Flap:
"A tour de force."
LOS ANGELES TIMES
Ivy Rowe may not have much education, but her thoughts are classic, and her experiences are fascinating. Born near the turn of the century in the Virginia Mountains, Ivy's story is told completely through letters she is forever writing, and that you will forever want to read....
"Few readers will be dry-eyed as they watch this extraordinary woman disappear around that last bend in the road."
