Gr. 5-10. Books in the new Extreme Career series are informative, fairly interesting introductions to unusual career choices. In Epidemiologists, Asher, whose writing is straightforward and free of scientific jargon, takes a look at how the field of tracking diseases evolved, then considers a variety of related careers and the kind of preparation needed for them. Seidman's book, informative but dryly written, follows a similar pattern, discussing the history and evolution of the agency, the duties of an agent, and the education, experience, and training that agents need. Both books are effective introductions to sparsely covered subjects that will generate interest, particularly among reluctant readers. Color photographs and graphics appear throughout the books, adding extra appeal. A bibliography, a glossary, and suggestions for further reading are appended to each volume. Ed Sullivan
