Each book begins with childhood events that influenced the subject's interest in flight and space, followed by a thorough account of his or her education. The path taken to being selected by NASA and the training are described in detail. The significance of being the first American in space, the first man on the moon, and the first Hispanic woman in space is explained. The writing is fast paced and lively. Many color photographs and occasional full-page sidebars enhance the texts. Leon Wagener's One Giant Leap(Forge, 2004) and Neal Thompson's Light This Candle(Crown, 2004) are for older readers.
