How does someone become a piece of meat?Carol J. Adams answers this question in this provocative book by finding hidden meanings in the culture around us. From advertisements to T-shirts, from billboards to menus, from matchbook covers to comics, images of women and animals are merged - with devastating consequences.Like her groundbreaking The Sexual Politics of Meat, which has been published in two editions, The Pornography of Meat uncovers startling connections:Why pornography demonstrates such a fascination with slaughtering and huntingFixations on women's body parts expressed through ads for the breasts, legs, and thighs of chickens and turkeysAnimals to be eaten as meat presented in seductive poses and sexy clothingBack-entry poses in pornography, implying that women - especially women of color - are like animals: insatiableHow meat advertising draws on X-rated imagesWhy at least one prominent animal-rights group is actually "in bed" with pornographers. With 200 illustrations, this courageous and explosive book establishes why Adams's slide show, upon which The Pornography of Meat is based, is so popular on campuses across North America and is reviled by the groups she takes on with insight and passion. From the rise of chain steakhouses to the language of the hunt, from the halls of government to the practice of artificial insemination on farm animals, The Pornography of Meat shows exactly how harm to others parades as fun.

About the Author:

Carol J. Adams is an activist and author of The Pornography of Meat, Living Among Meat Eaters, and many other books challenging a sexist, meat-eating world. She is a sought-after speaker throughout North America and Europe, and has been invited to more than 100 campuses to show "The Sexual Politics of Meat Slide Show," which is always being updated to include contemporary cultural representations.

Review:
"Adams's radical feminist sensibilities are especially prominent in her provocative new book, The Pornography of Meat, in which she exposes the insidious linkage that is regularly established between images of women and of animals/meat—in advertising, restaurant menus, pornographic magazines, and other media outlets—as consumable objects on display in our contemporary culture....Adams addresses a whole series of very important issues in her book, including the objectification of women, misogyny, racism, rape, male dominance and entitlement, domestic violence, pornography, and the cruel treatment of animals....Readers should obtain a copy of The Pornography of Meat if they wish to view the kinds of visual representatinos of women and animals in our modern consumer society that reveal the grave dangers that result from perpetuating the myth of male dominance." —Gastronomica: The Journal of Food and Culture, volume 4, no. 4 (Fall 2004 issue) (Ronald D. Le Blanc)

"Even readers who do not share Adams's views should find themselves challenged and perhaps even enlightened by this unique work. Highly recommended for academic libraries and for public libraries with collections in vegetarianism."
—Library Journal, 5/15/03

"The book is highly readable, her material often eye-opening...Adams' central thesis is compelling..." -Paul Vlitos, Times Literary Supplement
"The content is compellign and often funny...The Pornography of Meat will make you think..." -Julian Bynoe, Outreach Connection
"To say 'I read' this book would be an understatement. It's more like I devoured it faster than my favorite veggie burger...Adams compellingly illustrates how women and animals are culturally turned into things...This book would be eye-opening to many, not just feminists and certainly would make readers more savvy of the subtle message behind an advertisement for chicken legs or breasts that is purposefully sexualized." -Beth Fiteni, Satya

“In 16 short, readable chapters, Adams shows why our culture views subordinate beings as consumable, complemented by an impressive array of visual images, more connections drawn, more in-depth, yet easy to grasp analysis... I challenge anyone to try and put the book down after flipping through it — it’s impossible.” —Vegetarian News
