The Science of Living Things series helps children understand that they are as connected to trees, rocks, and weather as the animals that live outdoors! This important series helps define the basic concept of life and investigates the incredible world of living things. Each book explores a basic scientific concept or animal using:
-- easy-to-understand text
-- clearly labeled diagrams
-- exciting, full-color photographs

Whales, manatees, seals, dolphins, and sea otters are just some of the many mammals that have evolved over time in order to survive in the water. From Arctic waters to tropical seas, vivid photographs and surprising facts about these salt water mammals reveal:
-- how these air breathing creatures have adapted to the water
-- their underwater senses
-- what they eat and how they raise their young
-- cetaceans, pinnipeds, sea otters, sirenians, and polar bears
-- marine zoos
-- the dangers of pollution, commercial fishing, and poachers

Taken from Chapter 5: A seafood feast All animals need a small amount of salt so their body will work properly. Most land animals get enough salt from the food they eat. If they drink slat water, they become sick. marine mammals swallows salt water with their food, but it does not make them sick. Their body has adjusted to eating in the ocean.
Review:
"The Science of Living Things... books present precise scientific information in clear, colorful illustrations, photography and graphic organizers. Labels and bold-faced typography further enhance the text. Noteworthy, too, are the boxed background pictorials and graphic charts... This series provides a wealth of science information for students from grades 3 upward. Highly recommended for librarians and teachers who assist students with science projects." -- Catholic Library World, 07/98
