Grade 5-8 Outstanding color photographs dominate this addition to the series. Five sections by different authors (whose qualifications are not given) discuss hidden animals shelters: year-round hideaways, hibernation shelters, those used only for raising young, permanent underground dwellings, and animal ``hotels'' such as burrows and cacti used by several species. The text places animals in each category, with a paragraph or two on the shelter and the animal's habits that relate to locating, building, and using it. Examples are drawn from a variety of environments throughout the world. The book's layout makes the already dry text somewhat disjointed, because long captions on each page and double-page spreads of pictures interrupt the flow. However, the fascinating topic and stunning photographs will delight children who have an interest in nature. The photographs put the book in a class above similar titles such as Elswit's Animal Homes (Western, 1984) which discusses some of the same shelters.
