Ian Derbyshire

Ian D. Derbyshire was educated at Cambridge University. For his PhD he carried out fieldwork in northern India. Subsequently, Dr. Derbyshire has taught Indian and overseas history at both Cambridge and York Univeriities.

The stated goal of this reference tool is to provide "as great a coverage as possible of global events from earliest times to the present day within a single volume." Such an undertaking is clearly a formidable one and, by definition, cannot be totally comprehensive. Indeed, the user should keep in mind what appears to be a Eurocentric and classical bias. The French and Indian War is merely a cross reference to the Seven Years' War; there is no cross reference at all from Queen Anne's War to the War of Spanish Succession and no mention of Florida's Seminole Wars. The ancient Greek city of Thebes is included but not ancient Egypt's capitals, Thebes and Memphis. Yet for the general reader, this project, compiled by 20 editors and consultants, succeeds. Comparable historical dictionaries are all limited in scope by geographical area or time period. Alphabetically arranged entries here include cities, countries, major civilizations, events, and historical and religious figures, with cross references provided. There are eight topical appendixes and an extensive "world chronology," and clearly presented maps enrich the entries. The work is highly recommended for all reference collections.
