At or near the Philadelphia Museum of Art, one finds a marvelous concentration of Cezannes from all periods--portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and figures--that cover the major themes of his artistic life. This book catalogues a major exhibition celebrating Ce zanne in Philadelphia. Forty-four works are included, representing among them the subjects to which he returned throughout his career. Views of his native Provence include a group of watercolors and late paintings on the monumental theme of Mont Sainte-Victoire. Three portraits of his wife executed over a ten-year period show a remarkable range in handling and expression. Four drawings that have never been published--including one of his son that is newly discovered--are also featured. The culmination of the exhibition and book is the huge canvas of 'The Large Bathers' on which Cezanne was working when he died.
