From School Library Journal:
Grade 9 Up Kellner is obviously sympathetic to Nkrumah, yet this biography balances the leader's successes and failures and personal strengths and weaknesses. Extensive use is made of primary source material in discussing Nkrumah's personal and political life as a Ghanaian nationalist and Panafrican ideologist and leader. Background information and definitions of political ideologies and groups are skillfully woven into a text which is both interesting and informative. Despite the factual emphasis of the text, Nkrumah emerges as a human being, which he does not in other biographies for children. The primary focus of the book is on political activities in Ghana and in the Panafricanist movement, showing Nkrumah's development and changes in his thinking and actions, and on discussion of responses, especially of Ghanaians, to them. One chapter analyses Nkrumah's successes and failures, including his own views as well as those of his critics. Numerous black-and-white photographs complement the text, but the captions for about a quarter of them are imprecise. The map is incomplete in naming countries and major cities. Sophia Ames' Nkrumah of Ghana (Rand McNally, 1961; o.p.) and Erica Powell's Kwame Nkrumah of the New Africa (Nelson, 1961; o.p.) cover only Nkrumah's early life. Kellner's biography is more objective, detailed, and balanced and makes more extensive use of primary sources than Robin McKown's Nkrumah (Doubleday, 1973; o.p.). Nancy J.
