The scientific approach to any subject is characterized by the process of constructing formal theories. The nature of scientific statements requires that they can be reduced to concepts that have either been defined, or can be linked to actual observations. Unfortunately, at present few areas of psychology have been developed to the extent that they satisfy this reduction requirement. This book does, however, take the more rigorous areas and explains them in a scientific framework. This volume focuses on the methods of experimental psychology which can be described by means of representational measurement, such as ordinal, extensive, and additive conjoint, as well as certain forms of multidimensional scaling. The emphasis is on sensation and perception.
