When the carefree and secure existence of the Evans children is suddenly shattered by the death of their mother and the impending loss of their house, they find themselves trying to recapture that happy existence on new terms. Determined to keep the family together, Meg, the oldest of the four children, is forced to run the household, care for Kathy, her two-year-old sister, and prove to her relatives that her brothers and her sister should not be divided among them. She is especially adamant that Kathy not be sent to live with Aunt Lavinia, a harpy-like woman who wants to give Kathy "all the advantages" that her husband's political and economic position will allow. When Lloyd Evans discovers a slightly dilapidated and inundated bugeye abandoned in the marsh, the children band together to convince their father of the wisdom, not to mention fun, of renovating and moving aboard the Tessie C. Price. The Tessie soon becomes more than an old boat in the minds of the Evans children. In an almost intangible way, the boat keeps the family together. Problems and emotions that seemed overwhelming gradually begin to fade as the children become involved in a series of adventures on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. They unwittingly discover a web of illegal poaching that is prevalent in the Bay area. Jamie is caught in a dangerous storm on the marsh when his foot is snared in a poacher's trap. And when Lloyd and Mr. Evans stumble across some poachers headlighting for deer, they are chased and meet with an unfortunate accident. Suspense mounts as they discover that one of the principal poachers is someone they know very well! A hurricane furnishes and exciting climax to the story when the Tessie C. Price is swept out into the Bay with Meg and Kathy still aboard!
