"Along with Jim Harrison, Ray Carver, Evan Connell, and a few others, Block is exploring the values--and disvalues--of the frontier in a thoroughly contemporary context."--Hayden Carruth

From the Publisher:
Though the long poem has a somewhat baffling history in the twentieth century, we feel that Ron Block's Dismal River escapes the usual problems of disorder and confusion and emerges as an extraordinary example of the form, one of the best we've encountered. Dismal River is his first book.
From the Author:
From the age of twelve to twenty-six I spent my winters in school and my summers working for my father, first doing farm work and then building and selling livestock working equipment. Although Dismal River reflects the deep and abiding influences of my father, who in local terms is "a real character," it is a largely fictional work. Only the river itself, threading through the Sandhills north of my hometown, Gothenburg, Nebraska, is wholly real.
