Grade 5-7 As grim as or grimmer than any Grimm, an anti-war fable by a Swiss author/artist. Rat king forces farmers pig and cat to fight in his war of conquest. The carnage drives cat mad; when pig protests, king orders his tongue cut out. Hiding, wretched, in a well, they befriend an erstwhile enemy, frog, now legless. The three are soon joined by the king, posing as a beggar, after which, Bremen musician-like, all return to the castle and a somewhat equivocal conclusion, the king still an unacknowledged enemy. A bizarre story, illustrated in somber pen-and-ink with pastel wash in a highly talented, bitterly satirical style appropriate to a political cartoonist. This is artistically and thematically kindred to Fritz Eichenberg's more brilliantly illustrated and concise collection of mordant adult fables, Endangered Species & Other Fables with a Twist (Stemmer, 1979).
