The fourth volume of this well-received title continues the format and arrangement of the original set ( LJ 3/15/89). The focus of Volume 4, however, is more specialized, with emphasis on women, Native Americans, and minorities. (A fifth volume is promised, to concentrate on entertainers, Civil War personalities, and other minorities.) The entries supply the same biographical overviews and annotated bibliographies as the main set, providing useful information for ready reference, ordering, and interlibrary loan. Perhaps because of the intentionally limited scope of the subjects for Volume 4, the entries seem less solid in some cases; despite the claim in the preface that the names included represent influential individuals in American history, some entries conclude that little is known of the life of the subject, or that their primary accomplishment was in being the spouse of a more dynamic historical figure. The articles are signed, although some show merely names without credentials. However, this volume is a welcome addition to the main set, and its cumulative index makes it a desirable purchase for those libraries that own the original volumes. For those that do not, Volume 4 can stand on its own to strengthen collections on women and minorities in America. Its only competitor remains the Magill Great Lives from History: American Series ( LJ 6/1/87). For public, school, and university libraries.
