From Library Journal:
This fifth and final volume of the well-received series is organized in the same format as its predecessors (Vols. 1-3, LJ 3/15/89; Vol. 4, LJ 7/91). The emphasis here, however, is on religious leaders, Civil War and frontier personalities, explorers, artists, and current leaders. More than in any previous volume, the concept of what constitutes American biography has been stretched to include such personages as Louis XVI and Mother Teresa. Some entries are disappointingly brief while others are somewhat unbalanced, e.g., most of the biographical information on George Bush concentrates on the Gulf War. This volume still fails to list credentials for the authors of each entry; some names appear without any affiliation. In spite of this disturbing practice, most of the articles are of the same high quality as in the rest of the set (with one glaring exception in an earlier volume--the Edison article). Sections on historical figures grouped by era, selected museums, a table of cumulative contents, and a bibliography of sources cited in the set are included, making this a concluding purchase to complete a solid series of biographical information. With the publication of Volume 5, this series contains 452 names, comparing almost identically in scope (456 entries) with its only competitor, the five-volume Great Lives from History: American Series ( LJ 6/1/87). The set price for Beacham is $286, compared to Magill's $350. Either set would make an excellent purchase for public, school, and university libraries.
