R. Manning Ancell: Bob Ancell was born in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1942, the son of an Army Air Force fighter pilot. He grew up in Denver, Colorado, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. He graduated from the University of New Mexico with a B.A. in Education and did graduate study in speech.
From 1961 to 1962, he served with the Army Security Agency near Ankara, Turkey. Ancell was commissioned as a Public Affairs Officer in the Naval Reserve in 1971. His two-week tours of active duty included being speech writer for Admiral Ralph Cousins (Commander-In-Chief, Atlantic) aboard the USS Excel and the battleship New Jersey, and with the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in the opening weeks of Operation Desert Storm. He retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1992.
He is the author of more than 200 articles in magazines, newspapers and journals. He is co-author of "Who Will Lead?" with General Edward C. Meyer, former Chief-of-Staff, US Army; and "The Biographical Dictionary of World War II Generals and Flag Officers" with Dr. Christine Miller.
