Cesar Vallejo was born in Santiago de Chuco, Peru, in 1892. He studied law and literature in Trujillo and in 1917 moved to Lima. In 1921 he spent three months in prison where he wrote some of the poems in Trilce. In 1923 he left for Paris, where he co-founded a cell of the Peruvian Communist Party. From Paris, he traveled to Russia and to Spain, during the Spanish Civil War. He died in Paris, in absolute poverty, devastated by the fall of the Spanish Republic, in 1938. Besides novels, short stories, dramas, and several journalistic and political collections, Vallejo left five books of poetry. Of these only Los heralds negros (The Black Heralds, 1918) and Trilce (1922) were published during his lifetime. Nomina de huesos (Payroll of Bones, 1923-1936), Sermon de la barbarie (Sermon on Barbarism, 1936-1938) and Espana, aparta de mi este caliz (Spain, Take This Cup from Me, 1937-1938), were published posthumously.

From the Publisher:
We have attempted to reproduce the original edition, retaining all typographical and linguistic ambiguities, and matching the original typeface as closely as possible. This is the companion volume to ABRAXAS #40/41, which presents an additional 76 page selection from Trilce, and a second Translator's Preface. [See Trilce (selections bound in ABRAXAS #40/41) ISBN 0-932868-07-X]
From the Author:
I have been reading Vallejo in the original since 1970 and was persuaded to undertake the translation of this, his most difficult work, only by something analogous to a gravitational pull. My aim in translating this most difficult work was to create English poems, poems that would work in English in the same way that the original works in Spanish. Those who know Spanish have access to the original, but a translation exists to bring the work over into another tongue, to create the poem for the reader who has no access to the original. I also hoped that, in the process, I would be able to convey the multidimensionality of Vallejo's poems, and, that the reader who is able to read both English and Spanish, would hear in the dialogue between the original and my translation, another third possibility. I also hoped to place Vallejo's work into its proper context, as a work of indigenous blood, to paraphrase Vallejo himself, as aspect of his work which has been critically overlooked, despite his own words on the subject.
