They were among the first to sign up and among the last to go home. They were blessed by tenacious and efficient officers, led by John Haslet; but even so, the 550 or so who fought at Long Island at the beginning dwindled to less than 100 at the end at Eutaw Springs. In between they fought in every battle of major importance as part of Washington's army in the north and that of Gates and Green in the south. Ward's treatment includes descriptions of both major and many minor engagements, as well as battles in which officers and men lent themselves. The appendices include rosters of officers and soldiers as well as biographies of key players. Ward's 1941 edition is reprinted here verbatim, with the endnotes also serving as the bibliography.
