This account begins with the geological formation of Seneca Lake, the Indian history surrounding it, the early commerce upon it, the cottage communities around it, the birds above and the fish below it. The natural state of the lake, especially the purity of the water, is an important chapter as is the future of the lake. During the nineteenth century Seneca Lake was a critical cog in the commercial development of the Finger Lakes area; during the twentieth century its usage gradually changed from commercial to recreational. Entering the twenty-first century, the lake itself will stay the same but the land use pressures around it will increase as a growing population recognizes Seneca Lake for the treasure it is.
