The contemporary world is being reshaped. Who decides the shape of its future? This book provides detailed information and analysis of the role of civil society organizations - NGOs and social movements - in the global debates and struggles over equity, sustainability and justice. The great world conferences and Summits of the 1990s raised hopes for comprehensive human betterment in many areas, including human rights, environmental protection, gender equality and social development. But hopes have been undermined, frustrated by crisis, war and an economic environment which marginalize many and increase polarization worldwide. This book outlines the challenges old and new. It examines some of the initiatives of local, national and international non-governmental associations to remake the world, looking specifically at multilateral institutions. What does the future hold for the United Nations and for the great international economic institutions? How could they better serve humanity? This volume is a resource book for participation, for active citizens in the emerging global civil society.

Review:
"This book is a valuable tool for an indispensable partnerhsip. We know from experience that neither the United Nations, nor individual States, can by themselves meet the challenges of the 21st century. We know that civil society's participation is essential." (Kofi Annan, UN Secretary-General). "I greatly welcome the present UNA-Canada study on civil society and the UN system. The thanks of the World Civil Society Conference go to UNA-Canada and the authors for so well tracing the experience of the past, and setting up so many much-needed pointers for the future. The study is a major contribution to clarifying and enhancing the debate." -- Cyril Ritchie, Chair of the International Steering Committee for the World Civil Society Conference (WOCSOC)
