About the Author:
Caroline Carter Jones was born and raised in Charlottesville, Virginia. She completed her undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Virginia, where she also met and fell in love with fellow student, Jerry Jones. Caroline and Jerry were married at University Chapel in December 1972. They welcomed their first child, Ann Elizabeth, in August 1978, and their second daughter, Emily Caroline, in February 1981. Caroline and Jerry have lived in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley since 1976. Retired from their teaching careers, they now enjoy volunteer work in their church and community. They also enjoy spending time with their three wonderful grandchildren, who live in Midlothian with their parents, Ann and Davison Long. Caroline began writing Lessons from Emily several months after Emily passed away but put it aside for a number of years while teaching in the Hospital Education Program at the University of Virginia Hospital. With encouragement from family and friends, Caroline resumed writing the book after she retired from teaching. She spent many hours reviewing hospital records as well as Emily's diaries, journals, letters, and other documents related to her illness. It is Caroline's hope that all who read the book will come to know her daughter and be inspired by Emily's remarkable faith and her zest for life.
