Tsung Dao Lee (published under T.D. Lee) is a Chinese-American physicist and a Nobel Prize Laureate. The author starts by surveying T.D. Lee’s family background and early childhood life. Born in 1926, T.D. Lee’s education was badly broken up by the war of resistance against Japanese aggression. T.D. Lee acquired basic knowledge of science through self-study and from great teachers he luckily encountered on a lonely and tough journey from his home town, the Japanese-occupied Shanghai, to Southwest China. After the war T.D. Lee was selected to receive a scholarship sponsored by Chinese government at age of nineteen and sent to the U.S. to be trained as a nuclear scientist. He entered the graduate school of the University of Chicago and became a Ph.D. student of professor Fermi known as the Pope of Physics. T.D. Lee received his Ph.D. degree in 1950 and became a physics professor at Columbia University. The unusual collaboration between T.D. Lee and C. N. Yang from 1946 to 1962 are described vividly. Their scientific accomplishments that led the two young scientists to Nobel prize and beyond are described in detail.
