She was tenderly attached to her father, and had been, after her mother's death, his constant companion; and her opening womanhood was full of sweet promise. She was educated at Mrs. Carpenter's school, and I have heard much from friends in Bristol,--and more particularly from Mr. and Miss Estlin, by whom she was greatly regarded, of the amiability of her disposition, and the love which she inspired. Mr. Madge never alluded to her without emotion, and when he looked forward to his own dissolution, it was a comfort to him to think that he should be laid in the same grave with her. As the winter of 1840 approached, it was found necessary that she should leave London. When this was known it was at once determined by a few of the members of Essex Street Chapel that, as a mark of their sympathy with her, and of the high estimation in which Mr. Madge was held, the expenses incident to the journey should be borne by them. And accordingly the sum of one hundred and sixty pounds was sent to her by an old and valued friend, James Bischoff, Esq., accompanied with affectionate wishes for her recovery. This unexpected and handsome present was a pleasant surprise, and as a proof of the The late J. B. Estlin, Esq., of Bristol, an eminent surgeon, and one of the kindest and most benevolent men I have ever known. His only daughter was at school with Miss Madse, and her dear friend. And so interested was Mr. Estlin in her case, that he went with Mr. Madge to Torquay purposely to see her, and to give her the benefit of his professional advice. regard cherished for her father by his friends, it was, as she stated, most grateful to the feelings of his daughter.
