If the spirit of kindliness and courtesy reside in the individual, his manners will naturally reflect this spirit; and so manners come to be accepted, in many cases, as an outward sign of conduct. When a boy or girl gives up his seat to another, stands aside to let some one go before him, picks up an object that somebody has dropped, or takes time and pains to do a favor for another, he performs an unselfish act. He shows that he is thinking of his neighbor's comfort and convenience,--not his own. We say of him, "He is polite." While true politeness springs from the heart, there are certain forms of politeness established by the usages of society which every boy and girl should know. The observance of these forms helps to make life easier and more agreeable; it smooths the way for us, puts us at ease, and relieves many an awkward situation. It is not the purpose of the school to teach all or even any great number of these forms. Only a few of the most commonplace matters can be taken up in the schoolroom. But, whatever the printed authority, remember no written rules can include the thousand and one little courtesies that the truly courteous person may find occasion for showing.
