This causes the chip to curl away from the finished cut and also reduces the tendency for the tool to spring into the work. The boring tool must have side clearance (b, Fig. 137) to permit of its biting into the work and thus peel off the chip; and also front clearance (c, Fig. 137) so as not to rub on the finished work. The clearance must be sufficient to preclude any chance of rubbing but should not be excessive or the cutting edge, not being "backed up," will break away and dull quickly. Have the boring tool bar as short as the length of the hole will permit and be very sure that the bar will clear as the tool works into the hole. 121. The Boring Tool Holder.--A boring tool holder in which the length of the bar, and the position of the cutting edge of the tool may be adjusted, will usually give better satisfaction Fro. 138.--Armstrong boring tool holder and wrench for adjusting or tightening either the cap or the bar. than the forged tool.
