In respect to inheritance, neither wife nor daughter was the heir of the husband or father. At the father's death, the eldest son took his place as the head of the family. The story of Jacob and Esau illustrates the regard paid to the rights of the first-born son. Under the Mosaic dispensation, however, these rights were materially modified. The eldest son received only a double portion; and, in case of no sons, the daughters inherited. These heiresses were obliged to marry within their own tribe, to prevent the alienation of the inheritance.
