The following narrative was found among its author's posthumous papers, but whether he had intended it for publica tion does not appear. As, however, it has evidently been written with some care, and as there is no indication that it was meant to be kept private, as in the case of other writings left by him, it has been decided to afford those of his friends, who may feel interested in stories of the kind, the opportunity of reading it.
I have appended a few notes explana tory of certain words and expressions.
