Cette Chrestomathie est consacrée 'surtout aux oeuvres poétiques de la France celles de la Suisse y figurent aussi. Dans le volume des prosateurs, pour ne pas entrer en con currence avec l'ouvrage de MM. Tissot et Cornut, j'avais du laisser presque entièrement de côté les auteurs romands. Dans celui-ci, cette omission, que je trouvais trés regret table, est réparée en partie. J'ai fait également une place aux poètes belges et aux exotiques, de sorte que cet ouvrage a un caractère de généralité et d'équité littéraires beaucoup plus grand que celui du premier. A d'autres égards, il est plus complet encore, car, en dehors de l'étude sommaire consacrée à chaque écrivain, j'ai fait précéder chaque école d'une notice littéraire générale destinée à guider les non initiés, et les notes sont plus nombreuses En rédigeant la partie critique de mon ouvrage, je me suis efforcé, du reste, d'étre absolument objectif; j'ai tâché aussi de donner à. Chaque poète une place proportionnée à son importance.
