Now it is, I think, always desirable in the first instance to get a clear idea of the ground covered by a subject of which one proposes to treat. Modern, post-muhammadan, Persian literature - a literature covering a period Of about a thousand years - is what I propose to discuss this afternoon but I must Observe in passing that a comprehensive survey of the literature or literatures of Persia would include more than this. There are three older pre-muhammadan literatures well worthy of. Study which belong to Persia; and, though I shall not have time to discuss them to - day, I must at least mention them.
