"From dawn till after day is done,
Mama loves her little one."

A fussy lamb is crying, so her mama dries her tears.
A noisy bird is chirping, so his mama gently sweetens his song.
A sleepy kangaroo is fading, and her mama carries her in her safe, cozy pouch.

Even when kids are not at their best—no matter what, no matter when—mothers love their little ones. Lezlie Evans’ warm, rhyming text delivers this timeless message with grace, and David McPhail’s charming watercolors of baby animals and their mamas strike the perfect tone: safe, sweet, and gently playful. This special book is just right for every child craving reassurance, and for every parent searching for words to express unconditional love.

From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-K—This sweet story is full of reassuring messages. Vignettes feature young animals who are not at their best or mischievous or naughty, and ask questions such as, "Who loves the pouting calf?"Clever synchronization will compel readers to turn the pages and discover each resolution and finish the rhyme. "I'll tickle you and make you laugh. Mama loves her little calf." The flow of the text creates curiosity and wonder. Repetition of "Mama loves the..." at the end of each vignette reinforces the message of unconditional love that a young audience often needs to hear. Various age-appropriate situations are provided. One ("Who loves the prickly porcupine?/Don't worry, hon, you look divine!) tackles self-consciousness about appearance, an issue not usually addressed in titles for this age group. The large, expressive watercolor-and-ink illustrations, in deep, colorful hues, are endearing, and children will easily relate to them. Animals appear on the decorative endpapers, creating a cozy beginning and end to a wonderful book that is perfect for one-on-one sharing or for a toddler storytime. Pair this winner with Ann Stott's Always (Candlewick, 2008) to provide a similar message from a boy's perspective.—Anne Beier, Hendrick Hudson Free Library, Montrose, NY
