The book begins by telling readers how rodeos began on American ranches, and then moves into mini descriptions of some of the main events: roping and riding, both on bucking broncos and steers. Several topics, including the history of rodeos, are repeated throughout. A page about learning to horseback ride comes at the book’s conclusion, which is odd since this basic skill is necessary before anyone takes hold of a lasso. For those who feel the sport’s animals are mistreated, there is a page of various opinions included, along with pros and cons for kids to consider. The plentiful color photographs should intrigue readers, though many do look similar. This title from the Incredibly Insane Sports series contains some solid back matter, including rodeo lingo and brief bios of important rodeo stars. Grades 5-8. --Ilene Cooper
