Review:
“[Sun at Midnight] brings the Antarctic to life . . . Thomas lovingly depicts Alice’s journey and the peace and beauty at Kandahar Station, where, nevertheless, the allure of the frozen tundra is complicated by the knowledge that a simple misstep could result in death. Alice’s attraction to Rooker, a secretive member of their expedition, provides another layer of intrigue, especially when disaster looms and he may be the only person who can save her. Illuminating yet quietly revealing, Thomas’s latest is elevated by its unique setting and its strong characterization.”
- Publishers Weekly
“Thomas vividly describes the shivery blue-and-white frozen landscape, the biting cold, and the ever-present danger that means one person’s small mistake could doom the entire team.”
- The Seattle times
“An intelligent, gripping read . . . Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this book is its stunning sense of place: not just Thomas’ descriptions of the frozen landscape―the light, the ice, the radiant skies―but also the emotional wallop it packs. . . During the most dramatic chapters, I was weeping, riveted, heart in mouth, barely aware of turning the pages. Reading, at its best, is transporting―it takes us to another place. Sun at Midnight does that brilliantly, conjuring a world of danger, intimacy, harsh beauty and infinite mystery that held me totally in thrall.”
- Book Reporter
“A compelling story juxtaposed with breathtaking descriptions of the landscape.”
