About Geronimo's Story Of His Life by Stephen M. Barrett

"Geronimo's Story of His Life" by Apache War Chief Geronimo as taken down by Stephen M. Barrett, Superintendent of Education, Lawton Oklahoma is an autobiography by the legendary Apache Chief in his own words. Barrett had Geronimo's Apache words translated into English by another Apache, Asa Delugie, a close friend. of Geronimo. In this way Geronimo's words & meanings are genuine & not "interpreted" by a white man with his own agenda. Geronimo 1829-1909 was a prominent leader of the Bedonkohe Apache who fought against Mexico and the United States for several decades during the Apache Wars because of their expansion into Apache tribal lands. Though outnumbered, Geronimo fought against both Mexican and United States troops from 1858 to 1886 and became famous for his daring exploits and numerous escapes from capture. At the end of his military career, he led a small band of 36 men, women, and children. They evaded thousands of Mexican and American troops for over a year, making him the most famous Native American of the time and earning him the title of the "worst Indian who ever lived" among the area's white settlers.
