Jessica Lynch was a Roman Catholic nun from an Irish family that lived in Brooklyn. After taking her vows, she chose to be known as Sister Luke. She was first sent to France to teach in a Catholic school. Then she was sent to Italy. She moved to Rome in 1932 and was given a room in a convent off the Via Veneto. She was a polyglot who spoke English, Italian, French and German. She was assigned to run the Vatican Information Bureau. She was known at the Vatican as Mother Mary St. Luke. She originally wrote this diary under the pseudonym of Jane Scrivener. Only in 1981 was her real identity found.
