In his introduction to this penetrating analysis of conservation leadership, G. Jon Roush observes, "In the past few years, environmental issues have moved near the top of most Americans' list of concerns." Reviewing changes and developments within state and national government, industry, and global environmental health, he describes the inevitable impact of such changes on the environmental movement itself.
"As the essays in this book prove, equally important changes are at work within the movement," writes Roush. "It is expanding, diversifying, and re-examining some venerable assumptions. A small social and political movement is changing into something else....The outcome will be influenced by a tangle of forces--values, traditions, and taboos; politics, economics, technology, and science; institutions, corporations, and government. Nongovernmental environmental organizations cannot control that tangle of forces, but with forethought and will, they can influence it. That tangle of forces is the subject of this book."
With the clarity and insight that comes from experience, a diverse and dedicated group of environmentalists address today's leadership concerns--the current and potential influence in the environmental movement of politics, ethics, science, academia, women, minorities, and the international community.
Reflecting upon a movement in transition, the authors conclude that only through a transformation among its leadership will the environmental movement meet the challenges of the coming decade effectively.

About the Author:

Donald Snow is former executive director of the Northern Lights Research & Education Institute and founder and editor of Northern Lights Magazine in Missoula, Montana. Since 1976 he has worked as a volunteer and staff member of several environmental organizations in the American West. He completed the Conservation Leadership Project as a staff associate to The Conservation Fund, based in Arlington, Virginia. Patrick F. Noonan is founder and chairman of The Conservation Fund in Arlington, Virginia.

From Publishers Weekly:
Ten environmentalists contribute essays on a variety of leadership issues in the field. They offer a mix of theoretical discussion (for example, on the desirability of a dialogue between environmentalists and theologians to develop a conservation ethic) and constructive suggestions (ways in which academia can play a more forceful role in the movement). Topics discussed include developing a cohesive vision that can make environmentalism as much a national priority as commerce and defense; the historic and current roles of women and minorities in both the rank and file and leadership of the movement; the collision between traditional, technically oriented organizations and contemporary grassroots groups, which tend to be highly political; the affinity between social justice and conservation; and environmentalism on an international level. While this collection ably analyzes current issues and proposes meaningful solutions, its scholarly, somewhat dry presentation makes it a better choice for the student or practitioner than for the interested generalist. Snow is the author of Inside the Environmental Movement.
