Although journalist Rafferty provides an adequate overview of the company's history, development, and significant events by era, this book is essentially a showy pictorial treatment of Harley models and Harley history throughout the century, with more than 300 vivid color photographs. Many of the two-page close-ups of vintage Harleys are so finely detailed that oil flecks and pits in metal are visible. Numerous accompanying sidebars note distinctive features of each model. Better histories of Harley-Davidson are available (see, e.g., David Wright's The Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company), but this pictorial tribute is an easy purchase at this price.
