K-Gr 3--In very basic terms, Murray covers what water can do to the land and the people who live on it. He explains how storms, hurricanes, volcanoes, earthquakes, and humans can cause floods. Full-page, full-color photographs sometimes enhance the accompanying text in each double-page spread. Limited statistics and photos of some floods are included: the 1993 Great Midwest Flood and the South Fork Dam break that flooded Johnstown, PA, in 1889. Though hurricane and tsunami floods are discussed, the photos show only oceans and palm trees. Murray explains that most floods are caused by accident, with one exception, the Huang He River flood of 1938, that saved China from Japanese invasion, at the cost of over a million lives. A cursory look at the subject.
