The discovery of a ghost at the Gettysburg Battlefield is just the beginning of many adventures for three young friends.

Chucky, Zach, and Philip decide to plant a garden after Mr. Baxter tells them they can sell the produce in the Cavalry Ridge Campground General Store. If they save enough money they might be able to buy the dazzling new Swiss camping knife that has just come in.

While digging in the garden plot, Chucky unearths an old relic. It looks like a coin, but it's not. The three friends pass around the piece of metal, rubbing off dirt and trying to read the inscription. Suddenly, the air grows cool and a shadow falls across the garden. The boys feel their skin begin to tingle, and a heaviness settles over them. The fuzzy, disjointed shape of a man begins to form before their eyes. What has Chucky dug up?

About the Author:

Shelley Sykes has always been interested in ghosts and history. Living near the Gettysburg National Military Park gives her the opportunity to learn more about both. Her first young adult novel, For Mike, received an Edgar Allan Poe Award nomination for best young adult mystery and has been nominated for several state book awards. When not writing, Shelley Sykes is active in Girl Scouts and investigates ghosts and haunted locations.

Lois Szymanski is the author of 10 books for young readers, including Little Icicle and Sea Feather. She is the only author in the state of Maryland to start a writing club for children, under the umbrella of the 4-H program. She also created a program in which children can exhibit their writing at a county fair, and have it evaluated by professional writers from the community. Lois Szymanski has written for numerous children’s publications, including Highlights For Children and U*S*Kids Magazine. She is regional advisor for the Maryland/Delaware/West Virginia sector of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.
