Jake Salmon is a sixth-grader who has moved to a creepy, cramped house in historic Manassas. When he witnesses a man running across their snow-covered lawn without leaving any footprints, Jake is faced with the possibility that the axe-wielding madman may in fact be the ghost of Civil War soldier Thomas Garnet. Can Jake solve a mystery in history with the help of his little brother and his friend?

About the Author:
K.E.M. Johnston was born in Gibraltar, studied Business and International Marketing in the UK, speaks French and German, and worked in advertising and public relations in London s Covent Garden before moving to the US. She is widely published in children s, parent and business magazines, and when not working on her current novel, tutors a group of sixth-grade students in Creative Writing.

Ms. Johnston now lives in suburban Northern Virginia, on the outskirts of Washington, D.C., and a few miles from historic Manassas, the location for The Witness Tree and the Shadow of the Noose, with her British husband and three American sons who have not the slightest trace of a British accent.
Review:
Without thinking about it, school age children will learn about the Civil War, not dates and boring statistics, but an insight into a soldier s life, and they will learn about the dangerous methods that were used to gather and send intelligence reports by both men and women.
Reading The Witness Tree together as a family would give you a great opportunity to spend quality time with the kids. --Linda Robertson, Executive Director, Historic Manassas, Inc.

K.E.M. Johnston has woven the perfect ghost story, packed with tension, adventure, mystery, and good ol American History. For the middle grades, The Witness Tree and the Shadow of the Noose is just what the doctor ordered. --Lois Szymanski, Author of the Gettysburg Ghost Gang series
