Sisters against Slavery recounts the lives of Sarah Grimke and Angelica Grimke Weld. These daughters of wealthy Southern planters and slave owners renounced slavery in the 1830's. Through their writings and through a series of lectures delivered in the North, the sisters became famous for their views on slavery and women's rights. Although the sisters were active as speakers and essayists for a relatively short time in the 1830s and 1840s, they reached tens of thousands of people, influenced American views on slavery, and were an inspiration to women's rights leaders for decades to come.

About the Author:

Stephanie Sammartino McPherson, a former teacher and freelance newspaper writer, enjoys writing about science and the human interest stories behind major discoveries. Stephanie and her husband Richard live in Virginia but also call California home.

From Library Journal:
Grade 4-7-By any standard, the Grimk? sisters were remarkable women. By the standards of their time, they were extraordinary. Born into a wealthy slaveholding family in the late 18th/early 19th century South, they distinguished themselves from their South Carolina contemporaries, not only by developing an early hatred of slavery, but also by acting upon it when they reached young womanhood. Moving North and becoming Quakers, they scandalized society (including much of Quaker society) by traveling alone and speaking publicly against the horrors of "the peculiar institution." This clearly written dual biography follows the Grimk?s through their long and active lives as crusaders for equality, first as abolitionists, then as suffragists. Finely detailed pencil drawings accompany the text. Students will find useful report information here, and there is rich material for class discussions.
