As USA TODAY, The Nation's No. 1 Newspaper, put it, "Tom never catches Jerry....Wile E. Coyote can't nab the Road Runner. And the rest of the PGA Tour can't run down Tiger Woods." What is it about Tiger that draws so much interest, at home and abroad? Are we intrigued by the story of Tiger as a golf prodigy? Are we awed by how quickly he's marching forward to match and set golf records? Is it the 100-kilowatt smile? Is it his unwavering intensity to play his best at every event? Is it the give-back mentality he inherited from his parents? Our fascination is likely a combination of all of these things. Tiger Woods is a worldwide phenomenon, both on and off the course. Many feel the group of golfers who continue to chase him is getting better. Unfortunately for them, so is Tiger. "I just feel that I have room for improvement," he says, "and I'm going to keep working to get better." No doubt, we'll all be watching.

About the Author:
Jeremy Roberts (cowriter) has written on a variety of subjects. His nonfiction work includes biographies of Mussolini and Joan of Arc for A&E Books.
From Booklist:
There are a number of biographies about the world’s best golfer, but this one is particularly good. Not only does it chronicle the life of Woods but it offers a solid look at family influences, various tournaments, and personal relationships. The sidebars, taken from the pages of USA Today (a partner in the Lifeline Biographies series), add real heft, covering such topics in real time as the young penny-pinching golfer, the parting of ways between Tiger and his longtime caddy, and the news in 2007 that Woods will design a golf course. In addition, a great deal of care has been taken to outline the game to novices. Besides a basic explanation, there’s a two-page spread entitled “What’s in the Bag” that looks at clubs and a comprehensive glossary. Color photographs are well chosen, and there’s even one of Woods, his wife, his mother, and baby Sam. Source notes are also a welcome addition. Any kid interested in Tiger in particular or golf in general will find lots to like here. Grades 5-8. --Ilene Cooper
