Coming from a variety of ethnic, economic, and educational backgrounds, these individuals have succeeded in professions traditionally dominated by men. Education, parental encouragement, and a sincere desire to help others are some of the forces that influenced them. Each chapter begins with a clear photograph of its subject as an adult and includes several smaller photos. While Bowdish provides a good introduction to these women, readers will have to look elsewhere for more in-depth details. Unfortunately, there is no bibliography or list of resources. Many of the women will be familiar to readers, including Rachel Carson, who campaigned against the pesticide DDT, and Condoleezza Rice, the highest-ranking African American woman in the Bush White House. Lesser known choices include Dolores Huerta, who helped to organize farm workers with Caesar Chavez, and Maya Lin, the architect of the Vietnam War Memorial. Each profile is short, generously illustrated with mostly color photographs, and explains the difficulties that had to be overcome in order for the woman to achieve her goals.
