Hawaiian Herbal Medicine stands alone as a landmark book. Never out of print, it uses extensive research, historical documents, and interviews with Native Hawaiians who were experts in their field. The knowledge of many of these kahuna reaches back to ancient times when Hawaiian medical practices were based on rigorous training. This included mental and physical diagnosis, and the complex use of medicinal plants.
Today interest in herbal healing continues to increase among physicians and the general public. At the core of this book is world view which combines the spirit and the body. Hawaiian Herbal Medicine has both a practical approach, and shows readers the traditional importance of unseen things that must be resolved to achieve health and happiness.

June Gutmanis had numerous interests that bridged several worlds. Born in 1926 in Nebraska, she served as a pilot in World War II and worked with meterologists. She developed many skills but never pursued academic degrees. After moving to Hawai'i she became fascinated by its ancient culture, and was a founding member of the East Hawai'i Historical Society. Following years of working with kupuna and scholars, she wrote extensively on Hawaiian history. This included articles for National Geographic and Readers Digest, and books on Hawaiian medicine, prayers, petroglyphs, and other subjects.
A consultant for the film "Hawaii," June Gutmanis also worked for the Polynesian Voyaging Society on the maiden voyage of Hokule'a, and for the television series "Byrds of Paradise." In the field of Hawaiian culture, she lectured at Chaminade University, always showing great respect for the knowledge of the past. Combined with excellent scholarship, this has earned June Gutnamis a place of honor among island historians.
