If you have concerns about the future, then read this book. It addresses the question, "Now that climate change is happening, what do we do?" If you like nature and the outdoors, then it's likely you will love this book and its characters. If you like Abbey, Kingsolver, Hiaasen, Nichols, or Garcia Marquez, you might enjoy this book as well. Cli-Fi with a bit of magical realism that engages and inspires. Sleepy Valley is similar in many ways to the town where you live. Things seem fine, but no one is thinking about the future. Are you ready for what is about to happen to you, and to towns all across the country and around the world?
Marley and Brianne are not, and neither are their parents, their neighbors, or anyone else in Sleepy Valley. When they wake up the day after their high school graduation, their lives are turned upside down, and their plans for the future changed forever.
A series of climate catastrophes descends on Sleepy Valley, and Marley and Brianne must struggle to save their town and the world as they know it. Through their struggles, they find their voices and purposes for living.
The Big Melt challenges us all to confront what is rapidly becoming the greatest threat of the 21st century. This work of contemporary fiction will inspire you to care, more than ever, about what could happen in your town in the not-too-distant future.
This is a great book for discussion and to pass on to friends, neighbors, schools, and bookclubs. The author is available for video-conferencing.

From the Author:
I hope this book entertains, engages, and challenges you and readers of all ages to get more involved in slowing down our changing climate. I hope it grabs you on a visceral level and inspires you to take action.
While writing this novel I realized that climate change is already here and is affecting us all. It's not something way off in the future. What we need are role models for taking action.Compared to my non-fiction books, The Big Melt took a lot longer and was a lot more fun to write than my previous books. I had to keep upping my ante on the natural disasters - Mother Nature kept showing us we have not yet seen the worse of what she can do.
From the Inside Flap:
Ten Steps for a Cooler Climate

1. Reduce energy usage: insulate, drive less, use hybrids & electric vehicles, unplug
2. Switch electricity supplier to 100% solar or wind
3. Buy sustainable products to incentivize businesses to make more of them
4. Plant native trees and shrubs to clean our air & water and cool things down
5. Support local and national environmental non-profits
6. Reduce meat consumption and food waste
7. Encourage businesses and governments to support solar and wind energy development
8. Encourage energy-efficiency upgrades in all buildings and vehicles
9. Support the expansion of interconnected green infrastructure networks
10. Implement a national "carbon cap and dividend" policy or a "carbon tax" to pay for the real and hidden costs to society of using dirty fuels
