Innovation is a central mechanism in the progression of society and often captures the imagination and enthusiasm of corporate leaders, public policy makers, and so on. However, the cultural, political and social complexities of innovation that extend beyond economic and technological contexts are often overlooked. In this volume, a novel approach to deeply understanding innovation in contexts that range from the socio-cultural to the technological is presented. The fundamental principles and constructs of innovation are identified and described according to an interdisciplinary lens that gives particular focus to a variety of historical examples of innovation. This 23rd volume of the series "Advances in the Study of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Economic Growth" differs from typical entries in the series in that it is almost exclusively penned by co-editor Mars (both editors are of the U. of Arizona) and seeks to move beyond a focus on the market-based implications of innovation strategies and associated technologies towards a focus on the understanding the fundamental principles of innovation through a cross-disciplinary humanist lens. Over the course of the discussion he presents a non-market perspective of innovation built on investigating art, architecture, and other forms of historical innovation; seeks to identify the defining principles of cultural innovation; distinguishes between product innovation and process innovation; considers the question of the repurposing of innovation; explores means of assessing the impact of innovation; brings the previous historical considerations into dialogue with the present knowledge economy and contemporary society; and explores the relationship between innovation and entrepreneurship. One additional paper not authored by Mars is included, in which Randy Burd (nutritional science, U. of Arizona) addresses how innovation is perceived by scientific researchers in the academic life sciences.
