Nelson's got 'retirement'. It's not an illness, just something which happens to old carthorses at the end of their career. But when Nelson's boss, Mike the Milk, has problems with his new milk float, crossword expert Nelson finds himself called out of retirement to head off an environmental disaster!

About the Author:
Simon Weston OBE is a former British Army soldier who became well known after suffering severe injuries during the bombing of the Sir Galahad in the Falklands War. After recovering from his initial injuries, he has worked tirelessly for charity and is now a well-known personality on radio and TV, and much in demand as an after dinner speaker throughout the UK. He has published three books for children with Pont Books, A Nod from Nelson and its sequel, Nelson to the Rescue and Nelson at Sea. Television personality and presenter David FitzGerald (Fitz) currently writes for newspapers and magazines as well as hosting a regular Saturday morning programme for BBC Radio Devon. He and Simon Weston have been friends since they first met over twenty years ago. They share a whacky sense of humour and a wicked sense of fun, and enjoyed collaborating on three books for children, A Nod from Nelson, Nelson to the Rescue and Nelson at Sea published by Pont Books. David Fitzgerald also published A Very Berry Christmas with illustrator Robert Dudley in 2012.
Review:
Nelson is a horse, a carthorse for Mike the Milk to be exact, and as Mike has bought a milk float, Nelson has been retired. Not that he minds: it gives him more time to do the crossword. However, when environmental disaster threatens at St Mary's Dairy in Pont-y-Cary, Nelson and his chums Rhodri and Rhys, the stable rats, and Flight Lieutenant Pigeon save the day in their own inimitable way, and it looks like Nelson may not be retired after all. There are lots of in-jokes and plays on words that parents may well twig to more readily than children, but all will enjoy the zany storyline and Jac Jones's comic-style line drawings. A beautifully produced hardback, this short novel is Simon Westons first attempt at childrens literature and shows a sense of fun that children will respond to.
