About the Author:

MICHAEL WILLIS, Ph.D., is a curator of the North Indian and Himalayan collections in the Department of Oriental Antiquities at the British Museum. He has published extensively on the sacred architecture, inscriptions, and sculpture of Asia, and was an area editor (South Asia) for Macmillan's 35-volume Dictionary of Art (1996).
