This book is a love story and a memoir of American society. In this candid memoir Pat Shannon writes of her relationship with America's well-loved CBS news correspondent Charles Kuralt. They met in Reno, Nevada, in 1968. He was on his second marriage. She was divorced with three children. He never divorced. They never married. Private and protected, their companionship of almost 30 years escaped attention until Charles' death in 1997. Charles and Me tells of the life they built for themselves and the children far from celebrity's glare.

Award-winning CBS news correspondent Charles Kuralt, also known as the stylist of Americana, managed to keep his 30-year love affair with Shannon a secret until his death in 1997. They met when she was crusading for parkland in a black neighborhood in Reno and he came to cover the story. In this earnest and very personal memoir, Shannon speaks out about both their devotion and the many difficulties their relationship endured. Describing their companionship in painstaking detail, Shannon openly alludes to periods of long separations and silences as well as Kuralt's affection and commitment. Although he never divorced his wife, Kuralt supported Shannon financially through their long relationship and had close ties to her three children, whom he even put through college. Yet however poignant, this episodic account is ultimately unrevealing and so low-key that readers cannot get terribly involved. It's rather like reading a diary that records the weather but fails to give much feeling for relationships. It does, however, reveal that Kuralt was more gifted as a journalist than as a husband or paramour. Recommended only for public libraries where there is strong interest or academic libraries with comprehensive collections in television, journalism, or biography.
